AB  - This paper examines the methodological dilemmas that arise at the start of a five-year research project entitled "Social Transformation and International Migration" (henceforth: STIM Project). The project is based at the Department for Sociology and Social Policy of the University of Sydney, and is funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC). This paper will discuss the research problems that arise in planning the project, and provide information on the conceptual and methodological strategies being considered. It is thus very much work-in-progress, and the author seeks critical comments and suggestions in the hope of refining the research approach.
